Take Action to Protect the Mattwoman Creek
Oppose the Amendment to the 2016 Comprehensive Plan - MD Airport and protect the Mattawoman!
The Charles County Comprehensive Plan, Quality Places Natural Spaces, calls for protecting the County’s natural resources, curtailing sprawl development, and recognizing the importance of protecting the Mattawoman Creek.
The County now wants to amend this plan to remove environmental protections to the land surrounding the Maryland Airport with the hope of creating an “economic engine” by expanding the Maryland Airport to spur industrial and commercial development in Charles County. Past studies have shown limited demand for development in this area which would require infrastructure investment and significant county investment of tax dollars.
This “engine” will run on fossil fuels, and it is in the wrong place. Not only is there a lack of infrastructure, but it will also be built on land identified by state and federal agencies as having high ecological value prioritized for conservation. The natural resources of the land and streams surrounding the airport will be irrevocably damaged by industrial-scale development and increased pollution. The County will forever lose the ecosystem services this forested land provides, such as stormwater mitigation, carbon sequestration, and groundwater recharge.
We are in a climate crisis, yet the County seems eager to irreversible degrade the environment to pursue a risky economic plan, at a high cost to citizens' health, quality of life, and the environment. Don’t our children deserve a better future?
It is time for an open and transparent discussion of the benefits and disadvantages of the Maryland Airport and the proposed Amendment to the 2016 Comprehensive Plan for Charles County residents. We want to ensure that you are informed and allowed to participate in this significant discussion.
